Disability Equality Training

(DET)

Disability Equality Training is an informative training package which explores opportunity, choice and inclusion for all and highlights the frustrations, needs and prejudice disabled people face. The training is specifically designed to be non-threatening and simply highlights the issues disabled people experience on a day to day basis. The purpose of the training is to develop an empathetic approach rather than a sympathetic one and looks at developing a ‘can do’ culture. We aim to enable everyone to learn to celebrate difference and to develop a community which sees the whole person and not just a disability.

So who are the trainers?

The trainers are qualified disabled people and family members of disabled people. They are experienced in creating exciting and innovative learning opportunities whilst delivering a serious message in a friendly and fun way. They create a safe environment for their audience to ask questions and positively welcome people to explore their attitudes and beliefs in an open and honest way.

The training is designed to be non-threatening yet supportive and encourages everyone to work together in partnership to explore the myths surrounding disability.

Who is the training suitable for?

The training can be modified to suit any age of individual. We have specific packages which can be delivered to all ages of children and young people in school environments. We are also able to train staff, volunteers, independent, private and statutory sectors.

Each training session can be individually designed and tailored to meet the needs of every audience.

How long does the training last?

The training is very flexible and can be arranged from anywhere from an hour to a full day. The training could also take place over several sessions.

So what do we do?

We creatively deliver a clear message in a variety of innovate ways. We explore the use of language, look at environmental factors, openly discuss what having a disability is like, invite questions which we honestly answer and offer an equal and positive learning environment. We use a variety of tools and methods including videos, role play, PowerPoint, group discussion, partnership working with games etc. Each session is planned to ensure a quality and informative experience yet at the same time we are able to respond to the needs of our audience.

Is there a charge?

We constantly need to seek funding to deliver the training in order to pay expenses of our volunteers and workers. Small business and schools may receive the training for a negotiable fee or hold a fund raising event. For larger organisations there will be a fee.
